Ricordo del Sorrento. 2002.
Designed and created by Sherri Warner.
French gate, with a tunnel book inside.
8"Wx8"H.

The cover is a combination of two photographs that I took at the hotel where we stayed. The background photograph is the view from the hotel's outdoor dining area. Using Photoshop, I overlaid the background with a second photograph of an iron gate to which I added a drop shadow. I printed the cover on an inkjet printer, adhered it to the book board, and then drew over the lines of the wrought iron gate with Diamond Glaze, to add some sheen and some dimension. The cover is closed with a brass clasp from a home improvement store.

The font used throughout is Californian FB.

The back cover actually carries the title, credits, and copyright information. It was created using the same techniques, with a portion of the photograph of the iron gate.

The interior is covered with blue mulberry paper, to reflect the color of the ocean. The interior pockets are yellow vellum, representing the wonderful lemons found everywhere.

The book contains a quote describing Sorrento from Marian Crawford, photographs I (or my travel companions) took, and copies of maps from the Sorrento area. I scanned a bottle of Limoncello that I brought home and printed it on an inkjet printer. I also included a recipe for Limoncello, which I haven't tried, but I'm sure it's not as good as the original :-)

The tunnel book uses a postcard from the hotel where we stayed as the background. The mermaids in the tunnel book are copies of original acrylic paintings, embellished with fabric, fiber, and shells, that I scanned in and printed on an inkjet printer.

A pocket behind the tunnel book contains a copy of the excerpt from Homer's "Odyssey" where Ulysses meets the sirens.

This book was actually created with my sister-in-law in mind -- I needed a birthday gift! I have traveled to Sorrento twice -- once with her as a traveling companion, and Sorrento was one of our favorite places on that trip. When I read that it was at Sorrento where Homer's hero Ulysses heard the tempting song of the sirens, I knew I had my theme.
