Dorothy. 2002.
Written and iillustrated by Sherri Warner.
Concertina. 8 pages. 5.5"Wx8.5"H

"Dorothy" is about my mother-in-law -- Dorothy Marie Bruzek. It is a pictorial celebration of her legacy -- her family. The dedication reads, "What greater contribution to the world can one person make?"

This book was created in an edition of 8 as a Christmas present for each member of my husband's family.

The exterior of the book is covered with a yellow rose-patterned fabric -- yellow roses are Dorothy's favorite! The gold wrapping paper that covers the inside wraps around to the outside. A snapshot of Dorothy, a tag with the title of the book, and a photograph of yellow roses combine to create the cover.

Each page depicts a different role that Dorothy plays -- great-grandmother, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter. The text was hand-lettered and scanned in, printed on an inkjet printer, then hand-colored with a gold metallic paint pen.

Each family photograph was scanned in, enhanced in Photoshop, and then printed on an inkjet printer. Tags that contain the names of the people in the photograph are included with each photograph. Photographs not accompanied by a visible tag have a tag tucked behind them that contains what I call a "ghost image" of the photograph that includes identifying information. These ghost images were created in Illustrator by tracing around the edges of the people in the photograph and then adding the names of each person.

Lots of dimensional elements are included -- the tags, ribbon, gold cord. Many photographs of yellow roses are also included for variety. A pocket on the last page holds another photograph of Dorothy, the colophon printed on a tag, and a family tree.
