Daisy's Quilts. 2002. |
The quilts are digital photos of actual quilts created for me by my maternal grandmother, Daisy Lorene Harless Friday, printed on fabric with an inkjet printer. The quilts hang from a "clothes line" spanning the openings cut in the pages. It's hard to tell from the photograph, but they actually swing free. The text is a summary of feelings invoked by the quilts, starting with characteristics of the quilts themselves, progressing through the way quilts make us feel, and finally to the characteristics of the woman who made them. The font used is an old-fashioned Bookman Old Style. |

The inside pages are covered with Canson MiTientes in sky blue and grass green, presenting a view much like the one from my grandmother's kitchen window on laundry day. |
The outside of the book is covered with undyed cotton fabric, reminiscent of the muslin quilter's use. The back of each quilt is "stitched" with a felt-tip pen, and stitching lines also decorate the back of the book. |

Photographs of this book were published in dog
eared magazine's Fabric Books issue This is actually the second book I made after "rediscovering" book art a couple of years back. It was in response to an exchange where the theme was "Pins and Needles". I had just lost my grandmother not too long before that, and so combined the exchange theme with a remembrance of her that I could share with my family as Christmas gifts. The book is constructed from corrugated plastic -- I had just gotten a bunch of misprints from my sister-in-law (she works for a sign shop) and I thought it would be the perfect material because I knew I had to cut much of it away to make the "clothes line" and I was afraid book board might bend too easily. It actually turned out pretty well -- it makes for a nice "chunky" book that's pretty steady when displayed open. Now that I know more about syllabic poetry, the text in this book is on my list to redo. |
