The koi bowl is constructed very similarly to the butterfy bowl.
The koi are actually separate pieces...I started to attach them to the side
of the bowl, but then realized
that it would be almost impossible to get under them to clean. So they sit on
top of small glass jars. The
jars aren't really noticeable, especailly when there's water in the bowl.
The verse is, again, original and Haiku-inspired. It reads "Gilded scales
glimmer, gold shimmers in the
shallows -- gleaming coins with gills." I was trying to play off the words
"koi" and "coins". These words are
hand-written in the concrete.
The koi are constructed with a styrofoam and wire skeleton covered with fiberglass
mesh and concrete.
They were painted with concrete paint and sprinkled with glitter while the paint
was still wet. Then they were
sealed. They seem to take the weather fine -- they lived under water in a sink
for over a week, and have
since lived outside and seen several days of rain with no loss of glitter!
